TIRUNELVELI: As many as 2,000 cadre belonging to the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK), including 100 women and children, courted arrest here on Thursday.
The group was proceeding towards the District Court to hold a demonstration seeking justice in the Babri Masjid demolition case.
TMMK workers from all over the district started pouring in at Samathanapuram junction, from where they were to proceed towards the court. The cadre were arrested when they tried to proceed towards the court complex, despite being denied permission.
Tirunelveli district TMMK president S Muhammed Rabik said that they were observing Black Day not to show their displeasure against the dominant community but against the Hindutva forces.
Rabik added that once justice was meted out and the real culprits booked, the party would then stop observing December 6 as a black day. Umar, State secretary of TMMK, Usman Khan, Tirunelveli district secretary, S Seyyad Ali, treasurer, A Maideen Khan, vice-president, also participated in the agitation.
The arrested cadre were lodged in marriage halls and released later in the evening.
