Malaysia tells India not to meddle in domestic affair: Report
Kuala Lumpur, Dec 01: With India expressing concern over the alleged ill-treatment of ethnic Indians in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur has said it will deal with its citizens according to its laws and no other country should interfere in its "domestic" matter.
"I hope there is no misunderstanding of what is happening here. If they are talking about Indian citizens, we would understand the concern, but what happened involves Malaysian citizens," Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar said.
He said all Malaysian citizens, no matter their origin, had to abide by the law of the land.
"If they break any law, it is our right to deal with them in accordance with Malaysian laws," he told The Star when asked to comment on External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee's comments expressing New Delhi's concern over the alleged mistreatment of ethnic Indians in Malaysia.
Albar said if foreign governments start to question ethnicity in the country, Malaysia would eventually face a break-up.
Indians make up eight per cent of Malaysia's 27 million people, the third biggest group after ethnic Malays and Chinese.
At least 10,000 ethnic Indians took part in a demonstration, banned by the government, here last Sunday complaining about alleged marginalisation of ethnic Indians in Malaysia and 94 people have been charged.
Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd which wanted to march before the British High Commission to hand over a memorandum seeking support for a four trillion dollars suit against Britain for bringing Indians to the country as indentured labour and blaming it for their current woes.
Malaysian organisation wants India to play active role
Chennai, Dec 01: Asking India to play an active role to restore equal rights of ethnic Indians in Malaysia, Hindu Rights Action Force, a Malaysian-based organisation, on Saturday said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should take up their concerns of 'ill-treatment' with his Malaysian counterpart.
Singh could speak to Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on the issue, its leader P Wayda Murthy, who was arrested on sedition charges by Malaysian police and later released, told here.
Murthy, who faced sedition charges "for spearheading the November 25 demonstration by the community members," is now out of Malaysia and in the process of visiting more countries to garner support for their cause.
He thanked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi for taking up the issue of marginalisation of ethnic Tamils in Malaysia with Singh, which drew angry reactions from a Malaysian minister Nazri Aziz, asking the DMK chief to 'lay-off'.
The issue figured in parliament yesterday during which Singh voiced concern over the developments in Malaysia while the government said it was taking up the issue with Kuala Lumpur.
Murthy said Karunanidhi was the "most respected Tamil leader who was being looked up to by Malysian Tamils to solve their problems. We expect more aggressive steps from him and India in general to solve the marginalisation issue" of ethnic Indians.
"They want him to keep speaking for them (Tamils) and for the entire ethnic Indian community, he said.
